Como was a small, albeit pivotal, settlement located approximately 10 miles northeast of Fairplay that became the central depot for the DSP&P. “The first train arrived in Como from Denver on June 21, 1879.”[1] The railroad turned Como into a booming commerce hub as it grew with the rail line. Developments in the town included the “a large stone roundhouse, a turntable, coal docks, a railway depot, and a two-story hotel with a dining room.”[2] During the height of this economic boom anywhere from 10 to 26 trains arrived daily, and much of the population existed there to support railway traffic and commerce. Como became home to a variety of rail line employees and their families, as well as trainmen, shop workers and multi-national immigrants.
